Drachenwand
1,179 mvia St. Lorenz on the Mondsee
My first time with a via ferrata set and helmet. Left at four, at the start of the route shortly before six, and then a really awesome climbing tour — mostly C.
Before you go
Quick notes for your backpack brain.
- Parking
- At the bottom of the route, €3 day ticket — bought at an eco parking meter.
- Food stop
- Gasthaus Drachenwand right after. Kaiserschmarrn and Almdudler.
- What it’s like
- Via ferrata, mostly C. Nothing works here without a harness set and helmet. We went down via the T4 path.
- Who it’s for
- A good fit if you have a head for heights and you’re looking for your first via ferrata — for me it was exactly the right one. If you’ve never put on a set and helmet before: better practice once at a climbing gym first, then it’s way more fun here.
- When
- Being early really pays off. On the way down at nine, everything was already jammed on the route.
The whole loop as a video on Instagram — starting point in Maps.

My take.
My first time with a via ferrata set and helmet — and straight away a really awesome climbing tour. Mostly C, which was just right. Left at four, at the start shortly before six, and so early enough: on the way down via the T4 path at nine in the morning, we could see how the route was already getting jammed. Then straight to Gasthaus Drachenwand for a stop, Kaiserschmarrn and Almdudler. Being early really pays off here.
- 4:00 drove off
- 6:00 at the start of the route
- around 8:30 at the summit
- 11:19 back at the car
Leaving at four sounds hard at first. But that was exactly the difference: on the way down at nine, there was already a queue on the route. The summit time is estimated, the watch recorded the ascent as one loop.
